most durable phone for working on building sites?

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Question by knickers: most durable phone for working on building sites?
I am looking for a sleek an stylish mobile phone, one recently brought out.
My partner works on a building site and his other phones don’t really last that long because of dust, so one that will withstand dust, and also not gonna bust on it’s first drop if dropped.

I don’t know much about phones myself so if any1 could recommend, would be gratefully appreciated.

Hiring Professional Web Site Designers Vs. Building Your Own Website

Hiring Professional Web Site Designers Vs. Building Your Own Website

Build Your Own Website vs. Hiring a Professional Website Designer

The question of whether small business owners should hire a professional website designer or build their own websites using do-it-yourself software boils down to four primary considerations:

1) Site Ownership: Generally speaking, when a person creates a do-it-yourself business website they are bound by the terms of use of their hosting website. In most cases such sites stipulate that all rights to the materials on the small business owner’s website actually belong to the host! That means that if the business owner ever wanted to upgrade his or her site to a custom design or migrate the site material to a new host they would not be allowed to do so!

When you build a do-it-yourself website you are locked into the site and the host contractually and the provider never has to let you transfer your website contents. In fact, there are often service cancellation fees of up to 0!

This is not the case with custom designed websites. A good web development company will provide you with all the files you need in order to edit or transfer your site as you see fit at no charge to you. You should not generally be required to pay any fees beyond the design and setup price.

2) Price: On an upfront cost basis do-it-yourself websites are cheaper. Business owners can enroll in most build-your-own-website service plans for about to per month. In many cases there are no upfront charges and you only get hit with big bills when you opt to cancel later on down the road.

On the other hand, website designers generally charge you for their services upfront or over the course of your website, logo or graphic design development project. Web design fees will vary widely from one provider to the next and from one project to the next. The benefits of having a custom site build that you own are that you won’t have to pay the designer a monthly fee and you should have complete control over what you do with your site after it is completed.

3) Uniqueness of your Company Image: One of the key drawbacks of do-it-yourself websites is that business owners are often given limited options as to what templates they can use and how they can modify those templates. This can result in two or more different companies having essentially the same website.

This issue is not all-together remedied by using professional web designers. Many companies provide template based products because it allows their clients to more easily envision what the end product might look like. Template based sites also tend to be less expensive to customize and thus the clients can have them designed at lower prices.

You as a buyer should always pay attention to whether you are receiving a ‘customized’ website or a ‘custom’ website. Customized websites are template based. There is nothing wrong with starting from a template but generally you should expect to pay less for this service than you would for a fully custom website design.

4) Appearance and Quality: If you secure the services of a skilled and reliable web development company then you should almost universally receive a higher quality, better looking, website via a professional design than you would using a do-it-yourself website. There’s virtually no debating this matter.

In the end, whether you should choose a build-it-yourself website or a professional designed website is a matter of personal preferences. You should review your options and your circumstances and then make the decision that best suits your needs.

Q&A: can I start a charity website?

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Question by Alyssa F: can I start a charity website?
I’d like to start a charitable website, for a place like St.Jude’s. I know how to build websites, and I know how to publish them. But does it make any sense? What could I put on the site? Would it make sense for people to donate money to me, so that I donate money to the place?

Best answer:

Answer by Sargeant Saunders
There are state, local and federal regulations that you must follow. You cannot just have people donate to you.

How to create a website/forum for my WoW guild?

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Question by mechanicarts: How to create a website/forum for my WoW guild?
I like to think I’m pretty good in Photoshop but I have no idea whatsoever from coding. Sure I did some dreamweaver in my Multimedia class, and I am able to build a static website, but I can’t make anything near an online site.

The site gotta have a news system (like a blog) AND a forum for the members.

Any ideas?

OH and it has to be free. Free as in 100% free, no strings attached.
Hey pretty, I don’t have my own guild. I’m just the best photoshopper in the guild I belong and that’s why they asked me. I am a nerd, yes, but at least a nerd that knows useful stuff.

How do you build a website with photoshop and dreamweaver using CSS in simple steps>?

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Question by buck: How do you build a website with photoshop and dreamweaver using CSS in simple steps>?
Just learning some web design stuff and I havent yet grasped the steps to it yet. I understand the graphics and layout features that you use to present in dreamweaver. But, do you create a mock up in Photoshop, slice the photo then bring it in to Dreamweaver. Also in dreamweaver, for each separate part do you create an Ap Div on the screen and then import graphics in to the Header, content, and footer. Someone please layout the process starting with dreamweaver assuming i have all graphics done. Be detailed please!

Well, if you have a page full of links (and only links), then just make a page layout, and save it as a single image. Then use an HTML image map to map out the link positions.

If you have a page that uses more than just links, yes, you must slice the images – the easiest way to arrange them on a page being with a table. so slice them in rows first, then slice them in equal columns, and arrange them in a table.

I would say, learn CSS coordinates for a good site, then learn PHP to cross-browser it. Going into detail there would be extremely strenuous and could require me to write a guide, when there are millions out there waiting to be queried with google ;)

Hope that helps.

To the guy below me: Its very simple really: go to google.com, wait for the page to load, click in the box where you can type things in, and type in, oh I dunno, “CSS Coordinates Tutorial”.

I hate people who insist someone tell them every little detail instead of trying to figure it out on themselves; so please don’t get on my case for referring you to google.

how do i file for a nonprofit status?

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Question by twism: how do i file for a nonprofit status?
IS there any site that I can learn, speak with others in a forum and do my application right there?
Also if i build my org and want to add services to it do i have to file a different company or can I do it under that one umbrella ?

Best answer:

Answer by Tim
You need to file with the IRS for tax exempt status. There is a filing fee, I believe it is between 0 and 0 now.

You can add to the main corporation once it is established. Just file a fictitious business name statement with your county for any other names your org would like to use, but it all comes under one umbrella.

The reporting and record keeping requirements are very strict. The application is very lengthy. I would suggest obtaining help from an attorney who is knowledgeable in this specific area.
